Progress Report #1: The Art Of War

Earlier in the year, I posted my main New Year's Resolution: Get better at online competitive games. While I posted titles such ass League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, and Quake Live, my main priority, and the reason why I wanted to make my Resolution, was Starcraft 2. If you've stuck around the site for any amount of time, you know my past year has been full of Starcraft 2 giddyness, including videos, previews, impressions, and analysis. To keep good on my New Year's Resolution, though, it's time to put up or shut up: Welcome to 'Progress Report', a semi-regular editorial series that will happen throughout the year.

Fun with handling.dat

Almost a year ago in February I posted a GTA4 video of good friend theqat and I on a scooter being molestered by a flying Mack Truck.

With the recent no friction cars video making the rounds on the internet, theqat decided to have a go at replacing random values in the handling.dat file for GTA4- with some fantastic results. He's painstakingly chronicled his adventures for us to enjoy!

This one is also jamazing.

Nitrobeard: Episode 27

Welcome to a new year, and welcome to Nitrobeard! 2011 starts with a bang when Brian Belida, Mark Bradshaw, Imran Khan, and Wes Gardner get together to talk about holidays, homeless celebrities, and the tragedy that is the Sakura-Con 2009 advertisement.

We also discuss games! The Steam sale took hold of our wallets, as we share stories of Super Meat Boy, Lost Planet 2, Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light, Dead Rising 2, and Mass Effect 2. We also show some tabletop love, and talk about Heroscape. The crew dabbles some more thoughts into the mix, talking about Fight Sticks, the staff's New Year's Resolutions, the 'perception of value', and the ways our industry is being overrun by cynicism.

It's a New Year, which means an all-new Beard! It's 2011, Bearders! It's Nitrobeard, and WE'RE LIVE!

Get Fit with Mel B
Developer: Deep Silver
Publisher: Deep Silver
Platforms: PlayStation 3

The most damning aspect of Move and Kinect is that no longer can you relegate stuff like “Get Fit With Mel B” into the Wii ghetto and move on with your life. No, now this thing is sitting there next to Red Dead Redemption and Vanquish and other real video games, cheapening everyone in the process. But mainly me.

I don’t even know what Mel B brings to the table aside an endorsement from a woman that I want very badly to kick my ass Let’s see what the official website has to say for itself:
Good Game Get Fit with Mel B is arguably the best overall fitness game on the market. Unparalleled graphics and replayability. —DieHard GameFAN
Yeah, y’know, because DieHard GameFAN is your go-to source for news and opinion on sports and fitness products.

Undercity

While we at Nitrobeard are getting prepped to start the year 2011 at a full sprint, sit back with us and watch this incredible film by Andrew Wonder entitled 'Undercity'. Andrew takes a Canon 5D MKII digital camcorder, 'urban explorer' Steve Duncan, Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge, and a wreckless disregard for authority, and explores the literal undercity of Manhattan.

Wallet Abuse Wednesday Year in Review Part 2

**June **

It was right around here where we realized something was amiss.

Peace Walker and Sin and Punishment 2 provided quality hardcore gaming experiences on their respective consoles (and no one cared), Alpha Protocol gave a strong argument against any further attempts by Obsidian to develop it’s own intellectual property, and Green Day Rock Band will best be remembered as the slight scraping noise barely heard above  the band in the Titanic’s ballroom.

New Year's Gaming Resolutions

As 2011 quickly approaches in just a matter of days, I find that I am reconsidering how I will play video games in the new year.  As I mentioned on the Beardcast just a few weeks ago, over the course of the least year, I have discovered that hype cycles are doing a lot to bore me and the genuinely hidden surprises of the year are way more exciting than the biggest-budgeted game.
