The evolution of the video game trailer song

Dead Space 3 x Phil Collins / Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 x Some goddamn metal

Dead Space 3 x Phil Collins / Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 x Some goddamn metal

Most every night, after my wife and 8 month-old son go to sleep, I make myself a hot beverage, possibly grab some snacks, and retreat to my office to get an hour or two of time.

Yesterday, the sudden urge to watch / listen to the theme song for Ritual Entertainment's Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² struck me. So with tea and chocolate chip cookies in hand- I indulged. I hope you will as well.

At one point Julie, the heroine, is fighting ghosts. WITH A CHAINGUN.

I mean she is wielding a chaingun. Not the ghosts. I hope we get a chainsaw-wielding ghosts game some time.

The trailer also yields an amazing deal with it .gif at the end.

And that SONG. An original song. Composed specifically for the game with hard-hitting lyrics such as :

It's time so show 'em the heavy metal way/
I'm gonna kick your ass five ways to Friday/
You cross me now and I'll cut you in two/
Feel the sword - it was good for me too/

The rest of the soundtrack has songs by the likes of Pantera, Insane Clown Posse, and System of a Down.

Good memories. Watched a kicking trailer, played some video games, then went to bed.

Cut to this morning, and the news of a new Dead Space 3 trailer. Dead Space! A series that has had some absolutely amazing, thematic, atmospheric music that gets you in the proper mood for some survival horror. Or shooting horror. Or yelling at your gun to reload horror in this iteration I suppose.

Look, it's true that when the drum beat drops in my pulse races and my skin gets a bit tingly, but I think playing Phill Collins' In The Air Tonight over anything might have the same effect. Let's put that to a mildly NSFW test.

Whatever. Game trailering is dead, dudes.
