In all the hullabaloo last week about the (admittedly seminal) Dead Island trailer, a CG short film set in the Dead Rising Island world, I feel a bit of a point was missed about video game trailers in general. They are products of public relations and marketing, designed first and foremost to sell you the game and secondly to accurately represent it. While Dead Island tugged at a few heartstrings, and perhaps similar wallet strings, the trailer could ultimately be wholly unindicative of the final product.
To illustrate this point, I cut together this, the Super Monkey Ball cinematic trailer.
Doesn't that seem like art?
